How to Organize a Closet
You are so careful when walking anywhere near that closet door. One false move and the fear of an avalanche of junk is real. You have been stuffing everything in there, and now there is no room, and the doors barely close. You know you should be organizing closets but you just don’t know where to start, and do you really want to?
So, instead of organizing closets, you wear the same handful of outfits to work. You just wash and wear, and then hang them on the bed posts, or the treadmill, or the stationary bike as they tend to make good hangers if you don’t use them right?
Well, today is the day you are going to start organizing closets to be functional, and you will clear not only clutter from the them, but the chaos in your mind and the fear of the closet!
All you need to do is break this down into step by step processes. Steps that you can do gradually, but I bet once you get started you will want to get it done.
Organizing Closets - Step 1. You are best to do this on a full day, such as the weekend, when you are rested and their is daylight. Now go and find some large boxes, that you can use for your sorting. You will be labeling these DONATIONS, GARBAGE, KEEP. You can also have a pile for REPAIRS if you want. As many closets get full of clothes with buttons missing and hems that need doing.
Organizing Closets - Step 2. Open the door carefully, and basically grab a handful of something and then start sorting it right away. Follow the 5 second rule. It is believed that we know within the first 5 seconds of looking at an item whether we really want it or need it. So, try and use this rule and you will get through the mountain of clutter.
Quite often our closets are full of things from other rooms too, so you may just find something you have been searching for!. You can use your cleared off bed as a keeper pile if you need all the boxes.
Organizing Closets - Step 3. Now look at that keep pile, is it still too big? You may need to get ruthless and go through it again. But once you are done, you need to get those boxes out of the house now. Don’t stop at this last step, or you will lose that “drive” and they will now linger around the house causing more chaos.
Once you come back, really give the closet a good clean and then put back the keepers. Keep in mind they may need washing and ironing, to look their best after being crumpled for months in the closet. If your budget can afford it, this would also be a good time to install a closet organizer or some free standing shelves. Once you know what type of clothes are going back in the closet, you know what type of shelves to get.
Now pat yourself on the back, and try to get at any of the repair clothes while you are on a roll. Now you have a brand new wardrobe! Organizing Closets - How to Organize a Closet and Survive the Avalanche will give you more tips and ideas for clearing out that closet.
